Nelson Elementary School is a small rural school with an enrollment of about 70 students in grades Kindergarten through grade five. Our school excels in creating a family atmosphere through multi-grade classrooms, the collaboration of local groups and organizations, and close interaction between each class.

In addition to academic subjects, Nelson offers music, art, physical education,Spanish, nature studies (Harris Center), and instrumental lessons. Its students are supported by Title I services in reading and math, a special education teacher, a school counselor, an occupational therapist, a speech therapist, and a school nurse.

The efforts of the faculty and staff to establish a productive and nurturing learning environment for children are greatly aided by strong community involvement and support. Nelson School is a place where there is a strong emphasis on basic skills, where there is excitement about learning, where there are high and clear expectations for performance, and where children are challenged to reach their full potential.

The Nelson Elementary School staff participates in professional development opportunities, which impact school improvement issues on a school-wide level. This allows us to use our financial resources wisely and provides us with a shared professional vision that fosters school-wide collaboration and support.

2017 Nelson 5th Grade Celebration

The Graduation Celebration was a fun and festive ceremony celebrating the 12 fifth grade students from Nelson Elementary School. During the ceremony students shared a speech of their favorite memories of their time at Nelson School which included important lessons they learned, friends they made, field trips they experienced, and funny moments, many of which involved chickens. The 5th graders were joined by their 4th grade classmates to sing "Sad Song" and then the rest of the school and staff sang "It's a Pleasure to Know You" as a goodbye gesture. Many family members came from near and far to attend the ceremony and celebrate these students. At the end of the ceremony hugs were given and tears were shared as the reality of the ceremony set in with some of our younger students.

Many 5th graders and their family headed to Otter Brook for a celebration picnic when the ceremony concluded. The weather held out for our ceremony and clean-up but it began to rain during the 5th grade party. Students' spirits weren't dampened in the slightest, however, and many enjoyed romping in the rain. Thankfully, a pavilion space was rented and several resourceful families put up tents to keep the grill masters dry while they cooked hamburgers and hotdogs. Students signed yearbooks, played games, ate tasty treats, and reminisced about their time together. Families had a few moments to relax and catch up together as well. A big thank you to the Brooks family for cooking and organizing the facility rental and to the Millotte family for their help in putting on this fun gathering for students and families. Thank you also to Tammy Rondeau for making a special delivery of hot off the presses yearbooks for students and their families to enjoy.  We know the students will be prepared to handle the challenges of the Keene Middle School next fall and wish them and their families the very best!  Great Job Otters!
