During the months of
February, March, and April the students in the kindergarten class of Ms.
Benner begin to create an original picture book on a topic of their
choosing. The process begins with creating painted pages of paper
using a variety of techniques. These papers become their portfolio of
colors to cut from as they make their book.
The books are created in a collage, cut out style, which looks similar to the work of Eric Carle.
As students create their illustrated pages, they begin telling their
story to others. Once the illustrated pages are completed, students
then write text to accompany the pictures. This long term project
culminates in several evenings of “Authors Teas” at which time each
author/illustrator publicly reads their book to family and friends.
